I heard what I thought was the guy next door hammering at something on and off early this morning. When I got up, I went to check the porch for packages and found the screen door open - about a foot or so. Apparently, it had been flapping this morning.
Yesterday's Oaks was won by a filly named Secret Oath. My horse, Kathleen O. (named after the owner's 80+ year-old wife, Kathleen O’Boyle Kearney), came in 5th, out of the money. So, it's good that I didn't get to bet on her. Today is the Derby and I like Smile Happy - just for the name, of course, because I know nothing about the horses. A couple have been bred at Spendthrift Farms (Tiz the Bomb and White Abarrio), which is my favorite for farms, either breeders or owners. One of Dad's friends used to own that farm. I also like Calumet Farms (Happy Jack) - 20 horses in the race- 2 were scratched. They were both in the field - those whose posts were beyond 20.
My mint julep is better today - a bit more syrup.  I'm not as tipsy - yet. Jockeys are mounting at the moment. The picks from all the people are all over the place. There's a Japanese horse called Crown Pride - born and bred in Japan and trained by a little old Japanese guy named Koichi Shintani.
The real long shot Rich Strike - 79-1 won. He had a first-time jockey, too. He was a Calumet horse! Kentucky boys owned and trained. Epicenter (4-1) came in second, Zandon (6-1) finished third, and Simplification (35-1) finished fourth. Rich Strike paid $163.60 on a $2 win bet.
